Lemon Cake


A great recipe find in an old antique recipe box. Lemon Cake (Bread) – gâteau de lemo – gâteau de citron


  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • grated peel of one lemon
  • 1/4 cup sugar and juice of one lemon for the topping


Step 1

Cream the shortening, sugar and eggs. Add the remaining ingredients except the topping ingredients of lemon juice and sugar.

Step 2

Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

Step 3

While bread is baking, mix the sugar and the juice of one lemon.

Step 4

Remove bread from oven and pour topping over loaf.
