Steen’s Syrup Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 cup Steen's syrup
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Directions

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and the sifted dry ingredients. Alternate with syrup and water. Beat until mixture is creamy.

Step 2

Add 1/2 to 1 cup chopped nuts if desired. Blend well. Pour into well-greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
