Brown Sugar Vanilla Sauce for Bread Puddings and Desserts

Adapted from southernfood.com, this brown sugar sauce is great on bread pudding, fruit, pound cake, coffee cakes and ice cream. We eat at a Cajun restaurant that serves the most delicious sauce over it’s bread pudding. The cook gave me all the ingredients. Absolutely the best! For a treat, add 1/4 cup rum, whiskey or brandy to the sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup Karo
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Directions

Step 1

Combine in a saucepan, the brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and cream. Bring to boil over medium heat stirring constantly.

Step 2

Reduce to medium low and let the mixture boil for 5 minutes. Add the vanilla, stir into the mixture and remove from heat.

Step 3

Sauce will thicken as it cools. For a taste variety, add 1/4 cup rum, whiskey or brandy to the sauce.

Step 4

Serve over your favorite dessert.
