Maw-Maw's Dirt Pudding
Whitney writes, “A long time ago, my maw-maw taught me a recipe that I thought was very unique, decorative and fun to make! I like making this desert with my family because it reminds me of them. I think that if you give it a try, you will like it too!” This fun dirt pudding uses instant chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummy worms for a dessert that’s perfect for Halloween or kids’ parties. This is for Holly!!

Ingredients

12 servings
  • 1 box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 box Oreo cookies
  • 1 bag gummy worms

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Pour the box of instant chocolate pudding mix into a bowl. Add 2 cups of milk and mix with a wire whisk for 2 minutes until well blended. Chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set.
  2. Crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs (you can use a food processor or place them in a sealed plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin).
  3. Sprinkle the crushed Oreo cookies over the top of the chilled pudding to resemble dirt. Arrange gummy worms on top, letting some peek out as if crawling through the “dirt.”
  4. For a fun garden party idea, serve in a new galvanized container or flower pot. Use a new garden spade to serve the dessert. Great for Halloween Fun!!!

Common Problems and Solutions

Q: Can I make this ahead of time?

A: Yes! You can assemble the dirt pudding up to 4 hours before serving. Keep it refrigerated until ready to serve. The Oreo cookies will stay crunchy if added within a few hours of serving.

Q: What if my pudding won't thicken?

A: Make sure you're using cold milk and whisking vigorously for the full 2 minutes. Instant pudding should set within 5-10 minutes in the refrigerator. If it's still thin, let it chill a bit longer.

Tips and Techniques

For extra visual appeal at parties, layer the pudding and crushed Oreos in individual clear cups so guests can see the “dirt” layers. You can also add a silk flower or a small American flag on top for themed parties.
