Grilled Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich

Ingredients
- 2 slices seven grain wheat bread
- 1 pat of margarine
- 1 sliced banana
- Peanut butter
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Spread a small amount of margarine and peanut butter on one slice of bread, then layer the sliced banana on top.
- Put the second slice on top of the first to form a sandwich and grill on a George Foreman type of grill (or in a buttered sauté pan) for approximately 2 minutes on each side until nice, toasty and melted.
Tips and Techniques
For extra richness, use a touch of butter instead of margarine. The natural sugars in the banana will caramelize beautifully during grilling, creating a sweet, warm filling that pairs perfectly with the peanut butter.
Ingredient Substitutions
- margarine: butter
- seven grain wheat bread: white bread or sourdough
- peanut butter: almond butter or sunflower seed butter
Equipment Needed
- George Foreman grill or panini press
- Sauté pan (if not using a grill)
- Butter knife for spreading
Historical Context
While this sandwich is famously associated with Elvis Presley’s love of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, it’s been enjoyed by Southern families for generations as a quick, comforting treat.
