Good Tarts – Sweet Dough

2006-09-18

“A note from this recipe dated June 1998. I have used this recipe all my adult life.”

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup margarine or butter
  • 8 cups flour or as needed to make dough stiff
  • nutmeg to taste
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions

Step 1

Cream the sugar and eggs. Add the remaining ingredients.

Step 2

Roll out on a floured surface (grandma likes to roll her out in a mixture of sugar, flour, cinnamon and sugar) and cut into 4 to 5 inch circle.

Step 3

Fill with your favorite filling such as fig, blackberry, bouille, pineapple, sweet potato, all of which are on our website.

Step 4

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Do not overcook as tarts will harden.

Step 5

Store in a covered container.

Make fig bars with this sweet dough. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and place on a sheet pan. In a food processor puree the figs in a food processor or use a pastry blender to puree. Spread over the dough and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes. Cool slightly then cut into bars.
