My grandmother made these cookies all the time. These are very good with coffee.
Ingredients
3/4 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
dash of nutmeg
4 tbsp milk
1 tsp baking soda
pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla
Enough plain flour to make stiff dough
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the shortening and sugar. Add the eggs to the mixture. Add the milk and vanilla and combine well.
Sift together the nutmeg, soda, salt and enough flour to make stiff dough. Try starting off with 21/2 cups of flour and add as needed to make the stiff dough.
Roll out onto a pastry sheet and cut with cookie cutter. Grease a cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes or until lightly browned.
